The Colombo Lighthouse is one which many people don't really know about. Its location, just around the bend from Galle Face, keeps it out of view unless you continue past Kingsbury hotel.
Built and first lit in 1952, the lighthouse was once a city landmark. However due to the Civil War and its location in a high security zone it slowly disappeared from the minds of many in the Colombo populace.
The plaque at its base reads - "This monument marks the bold enterprise and vision displayed by the first leaders of free Lanka who by embarking upon such immense constructional works as the Colombo Port Development Scheme of 1950, emulated the shining example of her Great Kings whose public works shed glory upon this land."
